Surveillance Cameras Sold On Amazon Found Infected With Malware

2016-04-11 20:37:03 - Slashdot Your Rights Online : An anonymous reader shares a report on ZDNet Security researcher Mike Olsen has warned that some products sold through the Amazon marketplace are harboring a dark secret -- malware Olsen said in a blog post that while scouring Amazon for a decent set of outdoor surveillance cameras for a friend, he came across a deal for 6 PoE cameras and recording equipment The seller, Urban Security Group, had generally good reviews and was offering a particular Sony setup on sale After purchasing the kit, Olsen started setting up the surveillance system, logging into the administrator panel to configure it Upon investigation, Olsen found that the device was talking to a server with hostname Brenzpl, which is linked to malware distribution If the device's firmware links to this domain, malware can be downloaded and installed, potentially leading to unlawful surveillance and data theftPerhaps the company which made the device didn't realize its source code was compromised While the aforementioned incident should serve as a reminder to people on why they need to be wary of the product they are purchasing, this isolated occurrence doesn't prove in any way that plenty of cameras on Amazon are also infected, as the article and the original blog post are subtly trying to imply IMAGE IMAGE Share on Google Read more of this story at Slashdot

Reddit Deletes Surveillance 'Warrant Canary' In Transparency Report

2016-04-01 13:53:57 - Slashdot Your Rights Online : Arthur Dent '99 writes Today, Reddit deleted wording in its transparency report that would normally indicate that they had not received any national security letters or other classified requests for user information Such national security letters contain penalties for telling others about the request, as the government wishes to keep the request secret However, because Reddit had placed pre-existing wording in their transparency report in the event of such a letter, they were able to simply delete the existing wording to passively inform others that a request had been received, without actually saying anything at all This usage of pre-existing wording is known as a warrant canary to indicate danger, such as real canaries were used in the past to indicate the presence of deadly gases in coal mines IMAGE IMAGE Share on Google Read more of this story at Slashdot

Mass Surveillance Silences Minority Opinions

2016-03-29 23:17:58 - Security Bloggers Network : Research paper Elizabeth Stoycheff, Under Surveillance Examining Facebook's Spiral of Silence Effects in the Wake of NSA Internet Monitoring Abstract Since Edward Snowden exposed the National Security Agency's use of controversial online surveillance programs in 2013, there has been widespread speculation about the potentially deleterious effects of online government monitoring This study explores how perceptions and justification of surveillance practices may create a chilling effect on democratic discourse by stifling the expression of minority political views Using a spiral of silence theoretical framework, knowing one is subject to surveillance and accepting such surveillance as necessary act as moderating agents in the relationship between one's perceived climate of opinion and willingness to voice opinions online Theoretical and normative implications are discussed No surprise, and something I wrote about in Data and Goliath Across the US, states are on the verge of reversing decades-old laws about homosexual relationships and marijuana use If the old laws could have been perfectly enforced through surveillance, society would never have reached the point where the majority of citizens thought those things were okay There has to be a period where they are still illegal yet increasingly tolerated, so that people can look around and say, You know, that wasn't so bad Yes, the process takes decades, but it's a process that can't happen without lawbreaking Frank Zappa said something similar in 1971 Without deviation from the norm, progress is not possible The perfect enforcement that comes with ubiquitous government surveillance chills this process We need imperfect security -- systems that free people to try new things, much the way off-the-record brainstorming sessions loosen inhibitions and foster creativity If we don't have that, we can't slowly move from a thing's being illegal and not okay, to illegal and not sure, to illegal and probably okay, and finally to legal This is an important point Freedoms we now take for granted were often at one time viewed as threatening or even criminal by the past power structure Those changes might never have happened if the authorities had been able to achieve social control through surveillance This is one of the main reasons all of us should care about the emerging architecture of surveillance, even if we are not personally chilled by its existence We suffer the effects because people around us will be less likely to proclaim new political or social ideas, or act out of the ordinary If J Edgar Hoover's surveillance of Martin Luther King Jr had been successful in silencing him, it would have affected far more people than King and his family Slashdot thread

The Internet of Things Is a Surveillance Nightmare

2016-03-21 18:14:25 - Slashdot Your Rights Online : An anonymous reader writes from a DailyDot's Kernel Mag article Welcome to the Internet of Things, what Schneier calls the World Size Web, already growing around you as we speak, which creates such a complete picture of our lives that Dr Richard Tynan of Privacy International calls them doppelgangers -- mirror images of ourselves built on constantly updated data These doppelgangers live in the cloud, where they can easily be interrogated by intelligence agencies Nicholas Weaver, a security researcher at University of California, Berkeley, points out that Under the FISA Amendments Act 702 aka PRISM , the NSA can directly ask Google for any data collected on a valid foreign intelligence target through Google's Nest service, including a Nest Cam And that's just one, legal way of questioning your digital doppelgangers we've all heard enough stories about hacked cloud storage to be wary of trusting our entire lives to it But with the IoT, the potential goes beyond simple espionage, into outright sabotage Imagine an enemy that can remotely disable the brakes in your car, or even more subtly give you food poisoning by hacking your fridge That's a new kind of power The surveillance, the interference, the manipulation the full life cycle is the ultimate nightmare, says Tynan That makes the IoT vulnerable -- our society vulnerable -- to any criminal with a weekend to spend learning how to hack When we talk about vulnerabilities in computers people are using a lot of rhetoric in the abstract, says Privacy International's Tynan What we really mean is, vulnerable to somebody That somebody you're vulnerable to is the real question The state of security around IoT, the chip or sensor-equipped devices connected to each other over the Internet, is deeply concerning Just in the past few months, we have seen several instances of these devices getting hacked We have also seen things such as Shodan, a search engine for the Internet of Things that can allow someone to browse vulnerable webcams Many people continue to overlook the significance and potential consequences of their smart devices getting compromised Someone recently asked, So what if my coffee maker gets hacked What are criminals going to do Burn my coffee They can do a lot more than burn your coffee You see these devices are connected to your Wi-Fi network, which gives them the ability to interact with other gadgets connected to the same network When attackers manage to access one of these devices, it's only a matter of time before they own your entire network IMAGE IMAGE Share on Google Read more of this story at Slashdot

European Human Rights Court Rules Mass Surveillance Illegal

2016-01-20 06:32:51 - Slashdot Your Rights Online : Kekke sends this report from El Reg The European Court of Human Rights ECHR has ruled that mass surveillance is illegal, in a little-noticed case in Hungary In a judgment last week, the court ruled that the Hungarian government had violated article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights the right to privacy due to its failure to include sufficiently precise, effective and comprehensive measures that would limit surveillance to only people it suspected of crimes Under a section of the 2011 National Security Act, a minister of the government is able to approve a police request to search people's houses, mail, phones and laptops if they are seeking to protect national security The court said the Hungarian government should be required to interpret the law in a narrow fashion and verify whether sufficient reasons for intercepting a specific individual's communications exist in each case Or in other words, every individual case must be looked at carefully and a decision made on each Which is clearly impossible if the law is taken to carry out mass surveillance, ie, hoovering up information over the internet and then searching in it IMAGE IMAGE Share on Google Read more of this story at Slashdot

UK Voice Crypto Standard Built For Key Escrow, Mass Surveillance

2016-01-19 23:22:57 - Slashdot Your Rights Online : Trailrunner7 writes The UK government's standard for encrypted voice communications, which already is in use in intelligence and other sectors and could be mandated for use in critical infrastructure applications, is set up to enable easy key escrow, according to new research The standard is known as Secure Chorus, which implements an encryption protocol called MIKEY-SAKKE The protocol was designed by GCHQ, the UK's signals intelligence agency, the equivalent in many ways to the National Security Agency in the United States MIKEY-SAKKE is designed for voice and video encryption specifically, and is an extension of the MIKEY Multimedia Internet Keying protocol, which supports the use of EDH Ephemeral Diffie Hellman for key exchange MIKEY supports EDH but MIKEY-SAKKE works in a way much closer to email encryption The initiator of a call generates key material, uses SAKKE to encrypt it to the other communication partner responder , and sends this message to the responder during the set-up of the call However, SAKKE does not require that the initiator discover the responder's public key because it uses identity-based encryption IBE , Dr Steven Murdoch of University College London's Department of Computer Science, wrote in a new analysis of the security of the Secure Chorus standard By design there is always a third party who generates and distributes the private keys for all users This third party therefore always has the ability to decrypt conversations which are encrypted using these private keys, Murdoch said by email He added that the design of Secure Chorus is not an accident IMAGE IMAGE Share on Google Read more of this story at Slashdot

The Medieval Origins of Mass Surveillance

2015-12-21 21:13:59 - Security Bloggers Network : This interesting article by medieval historian Amanda Power traces our culture's relationship with the concept of mass surveillance from the medieval characterization of the Christian god and how piety was policed by the church What is all this but a fundamental trust in the experience of being watched One must wonder about the subtle, unspoken fear of the consequences of refusing to participate in systems of surveillance, or even to critique them seriously This would be to risk isolation Those who have exposed the extent of surveillance are fugitives and exiles from our paradise They have played the role of the cursed serpent of Eden the purveyor of illicit knowledge who broke the harmony between watcher and watched The rest of us contemplate the prospect of dissent with careful unease, feeling that our individual and collective security depends on compliance Eight centuries ago, in November 1215, Pope Innocent III presided over a Great Council of the Church in Rome known as the Fourth Lateran Council It was attended by high-ranking members of the ecclesiastical hierarchy and the monastic world, together with representatives of emperors, kings, and other secular leaders from throughout Christendom Their decisions were promulgated through seventy-one constitutions They began with a statement of what all Christians were required to believe, including specifics on the nature of Godby this time eternal and immeasurable, almighty, unchangeable, incomprehensible and ineffable -- and the view that salvation could be found only through the Roman Catholic Church Anyone who disagreed, according to the third constitution, was to be handed over to secular lords for punishment, stripped of their property, and cast out of society until they proved their orthodoxy, or else be executed if they did not Anyone in authority would be punished if they did not seek out and expel such people from their lands their subjects would be released from obedience and their territories handed over to true Catholics There was nothing empty about this threat the council occurred in the middle of the bitter Albigensian Crusade, during which heresy -- likened to a cancer in the body of Christendom -- was purportedly being cut out of Languedoc by the swords of the pious The Fourth Lateran Council was talking about crimes of thought, of dissent over matters of belief, matters not susceptible of proof But whether individuals were heretics could not, in theory, be established without investigating the contents of their minds To this end, the council decreed that bishops' representatives should inquire in every parish at least once a year to discover if anyone knows of heretics there or of any persons who hold secret conventicles or who differ in their life and habits from the normal way of living of the faithful These representatives were to follow these external indications of nonconformity into the recesses of the mind and establish their meaning in each case Over the decades the role of the inquisitor was developed into an art and a science, and elaborate handbooks were produced But in 1215 it was stated merely that individuals should be punished if unable to clear themselves of the charge What is all this but a fundamental trust in the experience of being watched Our trust is so strong that it seems to have found its own protective rationality, deeply rooted in Western consciousness It's an addict's rationality, by which we're unable to refrain from making public a stream of intimate details of our lives and those of children too young to consent One must wonder about the subtle, unspoken fear of the consequences of refusing to participate in systems of surveillance, or even to critique them seriously This would be to risk isolation It would be a trifle paranoid to reveal less -- a little eccentric, not quite rational

Automatic Face Recognition and Surveillance

2015-10-05 13:38:48 - Security Bloggers Network : ID checks were a common response to the terrorist attacks of 9 11, but they'll soon be obsolete You won't have to show your ID, because you'll be identified automatically A security camera will capture your face, and it'll be matched with your name and a whole lot of other information besides Welcome to the world of automatic facial recognition Those who have access to databases of identified photos will have the power to identify us Yes, it'll enable some amazing personalized services but it'll also enable whole new levels of surveillance The underlying technologies are being developed today, and there are currently no rules limiting their use Walk into a store, and the salesclerks will know your name The store's cameras and computers will have figured out your identity, and looked you up in both their store database and a commercial marketing database they've subscribed to They'll know your name, salary, interests, what sort of sales pitches you're most vulnerable to, and how profitable a customer you are Maybe they'll have read a profile based on your tweets and know what sort of mood you're in Maybe they'll know your political affiliation or sexual identity, both predictable by your social media activity And they're going to engage with you accordingly, perhaps by making sure you're well taken care of or possibly by trying to make you so uncomfortable that you'll leave Walk by a policeman, and she will know your name, address, criminal record, and with whom you routinely are seen The potential for discrimination is enormous, especially in low-income communities where people are routinely harassed for things like unpaid parking tickets and other minor violations And in a country where people are arrested for their political views, the use of this technology quickly turns into a nightmare scenario The critical technology here is computer face recognition Traditionally it has been pretty poor, but it's slowly improving A computer is now as good as a person Already Google's algorithms can accurately match child and adult photos of the same person, and Facebook has an algorithm that works by recognizing hair style, body shape, and body language - and works even when it can't see faces And while we humans are pretty much as good at this as we're ever going to get, computers will continue to improve Over the next years, they'll continue to get more accurate, making better matches using even worse photos Matching photos with names also requires a database of identified photos, and we have plenty of those too Driver's license databases are a gold mine all shot face forward, in good focus and even light, with accurate identity information attached to each photo The enormous photo collections of social media and photo archiving sites are another They contain photos of us from all sorts of angles and in all sorts of lighting conditions, and we helpfully do the identifying step for the companies by tagging ourselves and our friends Maybe this data will appear on handheld screens Maybe it'll be automatically displayed on computer-enhanced glasses Imagine salesclerks - or politicians - being able to scan a room and instantly see wealthy customers highlighted in green, or policemen seeing people with criminal records highlighted in red Science fiction writers have been exploring this future in both books and movies for decades Ads followed people from billboard to billboard in the movie Minority Report In John Scalzi's recent novel Lock In, characters scan each other like the salesclerks I described above This is no longer fiction High-tech billboards can target ads based on the gender of who's standing in front of them In 2011, researchers at Carnegie Mellon pointed a camera at a public area on campus and were able to match live video footage with a public database of tagged photos in real time Already government and commercial authorities have set up facial recognition systems to identify and monitor people at sporting events, music festivals, and even churches The Dubai police are working on integrating facial recognition into Google Glass, and more US local police forces are using the technology Facebook, Google, Twitter, and other companies with large databases of tagged photos know how valuable their archives are They see all kinds of services powered by their technologies services they can sell to businesses like the stores you walk into and the governments you might interact with Other companies will spring up whose business models depend on capturing our images in public and selling them to whoever has use for them If you think this is farfetched, consider a related technology that's already far down that path license-plate capture Today in the US there's a massive but invisible industry that records the movements of cars around the country Cameras mounted on cars and tow trucks capture license places along with date time location information, and companies use that data to find cars that are scheduled for repossession One company, Vigilant Solutions, claims to collect 70 million scans in the US every month The companies that engage in this business routinely share that data with the police, giving the police a steady stream of surveillance information on innocent people that they could not legally collect on their own And the companies are already looking for other profit streams, selling that surveillance data to anyone else who thinks they have a need for it This could easily happen with face recognition Finding bail jumpers could even be the initial driving force, just as finding cars to repossess was for license plate capture Already the FBI has a database of 52 million faces, and describes its integration of facial recognition software with that database as fully operational In 2014, FBI Director James Comey told Congress that the database would not include photos of ordinary citizens, although the FBI's own documents indicate otherwise And just last month, we learned that the FBI is looking to buy a system that will collect facial images of anyone an officer stops on the street In 2013, Facebook had a quarter of a trillion user photos in its database There's currently a class-action lawsuit in Illinois alleging that the company has over a billion face templates of people, collected without their knowledge or consent Last year, the US Department of Commerce tried to prevail upon industry representatives and privacy organizations to write a voluntary code of conduct for companies using facial recognition technologies After 16 months of negotiations, all of the consumer-focused privacy organizations pulled out of the process because industry representatives were unable to agree on any limitations on something as basic as nonconsensual facial recognition When we talk about surveillance, we tend to concentrate on the problems of data collection CCTV cameras, tagged photos, purchasing habits, our writings on sites like Facebook and Twitter We think much less about data analysis But effective and pervasive surveillance is just as much about analysis It's sustained by a combination of cheap and ubiquitous cameras, tagged photo databases, commercial databases of our actions that reveal our habits and personalities, and - most of all - fast and accurate face recognition software Don't expect to have access to this technology for yourself anytime soon This is not facial recognition for all It's just for those who can either demand or pay for access to the required technologies - most importantly, the tagged photo databases And while we can easily imagine how this might be misused in a totalitarian country, there are dangers in free societies as well Without meaningful regulation, we're moving into a world where governments and corporations will be able to identify people both in real time and backwards in time, remotely and in secret, without consent or recourse Despite protests from industry, we need to regulate this budding industry We need limitations on how our images can be collected without our knowledge or consent, and on how they can be used The technologies aren't going away, and we can't uninvent these capabilities But we can ensure that they're used ethically and responsibly, and not just as a mechanism to increase police and corporate power over us This essay previously appeared on Forbescom EDITED TO ADD Two articles that say much the same thing

An Example of Cell Phone Metadata Forensic Surveillance

2015-05-06 15:44:33 - Security Bloggers Network : In this long article on the 2005 assassination of Rafik Hariri in Beirut, there's a detailed section on what the investigators were able to learn from the cell phone metadata At Eid's request, a judge ordered Lebanon's two cellphone companies, Alfa and MTC Touch, to produce records of calls and text messages in Lebanon in the four months before the bombing Eid then studied the records in secret for months He focused on the phone records of Hariri and his entourage, looking at whom they called, where they went, whom they met and when He also followed where Adass, the supposed suicide bomber, spent time before he disappeared He looked at all the calls that took place along the route taken by Hariri's entourage on the day of the assassination Always he looked for cause and effect How did one call lead to the next He was brilliant, just brilliant, the senior UN investigator told me He himself, on his own, developed a simple but amazingly efficient program to set about mining this massive bank of data The simple algorithm quickly revealed a peculiar pattern In October 2004, just after Hariri resigned, a certain cluster of cellphones began following him and his now-reduced motorcade wherever they went These phones stayed close day and night, until the day of the bombing - when nearly all 63 phones in the group immediately went dark and never worked again The investigators now turned their full attention to the cellphone records Building on Eid's work, they determined that the assassins worked in groups, each with a leader and each adhering to specific procedures Everyone in the group called the leader, and he called everyone in the group, but the lower-level operatives never called one another The investigators gave each group a color The green group consisted of 18 Alfa phones, purchased with fake identification from two shops in South Beirut in July and August 2004 The purpose of the fake IDs was not to defraud Alfa out of payment every month from September 2004 to May 2005, someone went to an Alfa office and paid all 18 bills in cash, without leaving any clue to his identity The total phone bill for the green network, including activation fees, was 7,375 -- a prodigious amount, considering that 15 of the green group's 18 phones went almost entirely unused The first spike in call activity occurred in September 2004, immediately after Hariri announced his resignation The investigators contend that the green group was at the center of the conspiracy The phone number 3140023 belonged to the top leader, and the numbers 3159300 and 3150071 belonged to his two deputies He called them and they called him, but with those phones, they never called each other The two deputies carried phones belonging to other groups, through which they passed on instructions to the other participants in the operation When a member of one group would call a group leader, the group leader would often follow up by switching to a green phone and calling the supreme leader, who was nearly always in South Beirut, where Hezbollah keeps its headquarters On Oct 20, 2004, the day Hariri left office and his security detail was significantly reduced, the blue group went into operation It originally worked according to the same rules as the green group, but its active membership increased from three phones to 15, with seven connected to Alfa and eight to MTC Touch All of the blue phones were prepaid Some were acquired as early as 2003 and had seen little or no use The people who bought them also gave false identification, and again money seemed to be in plentiful supply The minutes that expired each month went largely unused, but the phones were loaded again and again When the blue group went dark, the phones still had unused minutes worth 4,287 The prosecutors say the blue group followed Hariri's movements On the morning of Oct 20, its members were already deployed around Quraitem Palace At 10 30 am, Hariri set out toward Parliament and then to the presidential palace, where Lahoud was waiting to receive his resignation The cell towers picked up the blue group's members moving with him and calling their chief From then on, the blue phones trailed Hariri nearly everywhere -- to Parliament, to meetings with political leaders, to long lunches at the Saint-Georges Yacht Club Marina When Hariri was at his home, so were they When he flew abroad, they moved with him to the airport and then stopped operating until he returned, when they would pick up the trail again Eventually, the yellow group was added There's a lot more It's section 6 of the article

Ask Slashdot What Will It Take To End Mass Surveillance

2015-02-10 07:00:27 - Slashdot Your Rights Online : Nicola Hahn writes Both the White House and the US Intelligence Community have recently announced reforms to surveillance programs sanctioned under Section 215 of the Patriot Act and Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act But do these reforms represent significant restructuring or are they just bureaucratic gestures intended to create the perception that officials are responding to public pressure The Executive's own Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board has written up an assessment PDF of reform measures implemented by the government For those who want a quick summary the Board published a fact sheet PDF which includes a table listing recommendations made by the board almost a year ago and corresponding reforms The fact sheet reveals that the Board's mandate to end the NSA's bulk telephone records program has not been implemented In other words, the physical infrastructure of the NSA's global panopticon is still in place In fact, it's growing larger PDF So despite all of the press statements and associated media buzz very little has changed There are people who view this as an unsettling indication of where society is headed Ed Snowden claimed that he wanted to trigger a debate, but is that really enough What will it take to tear down Big Brother IMAGE IMAGE Share on Google Read more of this story at Slashdot IMAGE IMAGE IMAGE IMAGE IMAGE IMAGE

When FISA Court Rejects a Surveillance Request, the FBI Issues a NSL Instead

2015-01-01 02:23:37 - Slashdot Your Rights Online : An anonymous reader writes We've talked quite a bit about National Security Letters NSLs and how the FBI DOJ regularly abused them to get just about any information the government wanted with no oversight As a form of an administrative subpoena -- with a built in gag-order -- NSLs are a great tool for the government to abuse the 4th Amendment Recipients can't talk about them, and no court has to review approve them Yet they certainly look scary to most recipients who don't dare fight an NSL That's part of the reason why at least one court found them unconstitutional At the same time, we've also been talking plenty about Section 215 of the PATRIOT Act, which allows the DOJ FBI often working for the NSA to go to the FISA Court and get rubberstamped court orders demanding certain 'business records' As Ed Snowden revealed, these records requests can be as broad as basically 'all details on all calls' But, since the FISA Court reviewed it, people insist it's legal And, of course, the FISA Court has the reputation as a rubberstamp for a reason it almost never turns down a request However, in the rare instances where it does, apparently, the DOJ doesn't really care, knowing that it can just issue an NSL instead and get the same information At least that appears to be what the DOJ quietly admitted to doing in a now declassified Inspector General's report from 2008 IMAGE IMAGE Share on Google Read more of this story at Slashdot IMAGE IMAGE IMAGE IMAGE IMAGE IMAGE
