From the Floor at RSA 2010 Real-World Mobile Network Traffic Validation

2010-03-03 16:02:03 - BreakingPoint Labs Blog : On the show floor at RSA Conference there is a lot happening and overall the show seems much more well attended than last year This show, as most of you know, is also a harbinger of news releases and product announcements Crossbeam, providers of scalable software and hardware platforms, distributed a few pieces of news leading up to the show and at the conference itself I went over to visit the Crossbeam booth 545 while at RSA so check out a live demonstration of their X-Series security platform using four BreakingPoint Elite chassis With this impressive demonstration in the background I talked with Crossbeam's Peter Doggart Q First off Peter, can you provide us with an overview of what Crossbeam provides Crossbeam s X-Series security platform lets customers virtualize third-party, best-in-class security applications and scale them to meet the needs of large, high-performance network environments Today, more than 900 leading enterprises and service providers, including 10 of the top 11 telecom carriers worldwide, rely on Crossbeam as the underlying architecture for the delivery of security services Q Crossbeam is demonstrating something very interesting here at RSA, can you tell us about what is going on and why In working with service providers over the past year, and in particular mobile network operators MNOs , it has become evident that they are under enormous pressure to meet growing network demands while simultaneously delivering clean data pipes What we are showing at RSA is proof that our X-Series security platform delivers the world s fastest firewall performance to meet the needs of mobile operators Using BreakingPoint Elite, we are conducting a to stress-test the X-Series chassis We are running a best-in-class application on the X-Series, Check Point Security Gateway R70 Firewall, to clean, inspect and secure the traffic This demonstration shows how service providers and mobile carriers can easily scale their network security infrastructure to cope with the next generation of mobile technology, 4G LTE, under real-world conditions Q You mention real world a few times in your answer and in the news release that went out What does that mean to mobile network operators There is a growing gap between what vendors state on their data sheets and what we typically see out in the real world in terms of performance There are two key elements at play in the real world First, we are seeing more attacks, which place a greater burden on our security systems and, second, we are seeing smaller payload sizes, especially with the growing number of mobile devices The result is that mobile operators need to buy and manage a lot more equipment than they budgeted for as the real-world demands are far greater than they ever anticipated This is not only more costly to them, but it is also a lot more complex to manage Realistic tests like this one at RSA validate that we deliver the fastest-performing firewall on the market under real-world conditions which means that we can stand behind our performance claims and mobile network operators can be assured that their X-Series security infrastructure delivers the flexibility, superior performance and high availability required to handle the unpredictability of growing data traffic demands Q How can this type of validation, throughout the industry, not just at Crossbeam, help the overall performance of MNOs Crossbeam s policy is to be transparent when it comes to performance claims We are doing the opposite of what many vendors do by actually creating tests that provide worst case metrics, not the best case Take the RSA live demonstration We are using BreakingPoint to generate 96 byte HTTP packets, which in the real mobile world would be the worst case payload size At Crossbeam, we want to create some real-world industry guidelines that everyone follows so mobile operators, government and enterprise customers understand exactly what they are buying, and can capacity plan correctly Q I noticed four BreakingPoint chassis in the Crossbeam booth generating the traffic for the demonstration Why does Crossbeam use BreakingPoint for product validation First, we use the BreakingPoint Elite chassis because they can accurately simulate the type of traffic we see in the real world and, second, because BreakingPoint is the only vendor that can push the Crossbeam chassis to its current performance limits Q How has using BreakingPoint helped the evolution of Crossbeam products Because BreakingPoint equipment pushes our chassis to its absolute limits, Crossbeam is better able to fine-tune its performance to address customer needs with the assurance that the X-Series can handle their network demands In the latest release of the X-Series operating system, for instance, we boosted the number of concurrent IP connections we can support up to 10 million, and increased the new connection rates per second to 320,000 These numbers are critical to mobile operators who need to support the growing number of smartphones and other devices, which create more traffic than traditional mobile phones and are nearly always connected Without BreakingPoint, we couldn t have confidence in our real-world performance metrics IMAGE IMAGE IMAGE IMAGE IMAGE IMAGE IMAGE

<guid

BYU students take first crack at replacing ID card with mobile phone

2010-02-22 12:52:31 - ContactlessNews Contactless Smart Cards RFID Payment Transit and Security : Pilot project enabled bookstore payments via microSD equipped handset IMAGE At Brigham Young University-Idaho in Rexburg, 120 students and faculty members are using their cell phones to make payments in the campus bookstore The mobile technology startup, RFinity, developed the secure solution using microSD cards with Near Field Communication capabilities to enable contactless payments with the devices The RFinity pilot at BYU-I will be one of the first mobile contactless deployments that focuses on securing transactions in a way that reduces the risks associated with legacy payment systems, says Aaron Turner, RFinity co-founder and CEO The company went after BYU in part because of its convenience The company is located just 20 minutes away from the 12,000 student Rexburg campus, says Wally McPheters, RFinity product manager in charge of the BYU pilot For the pilot RFinity supplied participating students with a new cell phones either a Palm Treo or the Ozone phone from Taiwan-based HTC Corp I was easier for us to prepare for the first pilot by providing them with phones, says McPheters The phones serve as a replacement or option to the campus mag-stripe ID card known as the I-Cards For the first stage of the pilot, which lasts through fall semester, the phones can only be used in the campus bookstore and are pre-loaded with scholarships and money to pay for books and it also includes a declining balance account BYU said the university store was the best arena for this pilot, says McPheters It s a full-scale store and is the center of all activities The store sells clothing, textbooks, technology, convenience store items, in other words a number of product lines other than educational The goal of the pilot is simple, says McPheters We want to prove the technology works and then improve it It allows us to show financial transactions at POS and give us valuable feedback We also expect to generate ideas for additional applications No personal data on phone Andy Cargal, BYU University communications, says each microSD contains the RFinity technology and a unique number that correlates to the student s account numbers in the BYU database leaving no personal information on the phone The pilot is being coordinated with the university store management team, while the outcomes are overseen by the university s Presidents Council, says Cargal Turner anticipates there could be an increase in sales just due to the novelty factor So far, purchases have ranged from a nickel for gum, up to 1,700 for a MacBook, he says Students were chosen for the pilot following several surveys that determined what s important to them and how they buy, says McPheters We wanted a cross section of people who frequent the university store and those who don t, so we could see how often the phones get used The company surveyed 1,500 students We looked for those attributes that would help us ID different types of shoppers, such as single under classmen, single upper classmen and married students, says McPheters These three buy a little differently That narrowed us right down to about 120 We then reconnected with them all to see if they were still interested and would be here this fall, and what kind of phone they carry Cargal says following the surveys there were more than 500 students who expressed interest in participating in the pilot He says those who didn t make the first cut are still on the list when the pilot expands to more students, likely in January Students control payment process Steve McCown, RFinity s chief technology officer, says the technology can handle two payment modes Quickpay, for transaction less than 25, requires the user to press a button on the phone to transmit the necessary information to the reader RFinity requires the user to actively initiate every transaction by pressing the button to protect the information from being accessed fraudulently or inadvertently For amounts of more than 25 the user must authorize the transaction by entering a PIN If a student is standing in line and getting ready to pay for 300 worth of books, he can preauthorize his next transaction by entering the PIN, thus saving time at the POS Then when he gets to the register, he simply holds down the button to activate quickpay, says McCown While 25 is the default amount each participant can adjust it to meet their personal security needs Some students have insisted on a zero threshold, which means they have to enter a PIN for every transaction, Turner adds Input from Giesecke Devrient IMAGE The system uses a microSD card from Giesecke Devrient called the Mobile Security Card CL for contactless The security feature in the Mobile Security Card CL is provided by a cryptography controller integrated in the card along with the flash memory The card can be used in mobile phones, smart phones, netbooks and even in USB tokens, says McCown If a phone is lost or stolen the student can call RFinity and shut down the key, says McPheters The second stage of the pilot is likely to include more applications and as many as 1,600 participants McPheters would not elaborate what those apps would be, but he hinted it could include adding the ability to read from a person s bank or debit account and expand beyond financial transactions This will be a way for a student to take his student ID card with him virtually From the student s perspective, all they d need is a cell phone, says McCown The project is going well, says Turner The thing students told us is that they like not having to carry a wallet into the bookstore, they love the convenience factor And they like the fact they can control their own security

Personal Mobile Devices Violate Compliance

2010-02-17 22:12:56 - RLR UK : Computer Weekly recently conducted a survey via Twitter on how many organisations allow their users access to corporate email from their own private phone Unfortunately, I haven't seen any results from this survey as yet, but it made me think about organisations that do allow private devices to attach to the network, not just mobile phones I have also had many comments on my blog post entitled 'Mobile Device Data Breaches', which have fed into this post In one of those comments, someone pointed out that in their experience users are often a weak link Isn t it always the case that users are the weakest link A poorly educated trained user can compromise the best security Unfortunately, I have seen so many organisations that do not adequately train their users or make them aware that there are policies, let alone what they mean to their daily usage of the corporate systems I have also come across one organisation where a top executive had all the system passwords stored, unencrypted, on his PDA He didn t see a problem with this as he always carried it with him How many organisations these days have push email onto a mobile How many of those organisations send sensitive documents around via email Do they have encryption and password access on those devices Not many that I ve seen The typical Blackberry users that I see have no password or PIN access to their phone, but it does have full access to the corporate mail exchange These devices also have the ability to store, and even sync, corporate documents What policies do you have to cover them Quoting from ISO-27002 2005 1171 A formal policy should be implemented, and appropriate security measures adopted, for mobile computing and communications activities Controls should apply to laptop, notebook, and palmtop computers mobile phones and smart phone-PDAs and portable storage devices and media Controls include requirements for physical protection data storage minimization access controls cryptographic techniques data backups anti-virus and other protective software operating system and other software updating secure communication eg, VPN for remote access and sanitization prior to transfer or disposal The problem is that most organisations do not have adequate policies covering mobile devices Moving away from mobile phones, are you allowed to plug a USB device into your corporate machine Many of these devices can store sensitive data and even access the Internet themselves What about an insecure iPhone connecting to the Internet and leaking data Most organisations aren't even aware that you can lock down USB usage via tools, but policies should definitely be in place Alan Goode, from Goode Intelligence, said the following I feel that you can lock down with security policy and tools but this is a complex problem as the combination of mobility and technology diversity, eg I can use my iPhone to connect to the enterprise network and store sensitive data on it, is creating a major headache for infosec professionals As well as the problem with laptops and USB drives we are also seeing a growing use of employee-owned mobile devices, netbooks, games consoles, smart phones, all having IP and WiFi capabilities and all capable of picking up enterprise data and email There are a number of things we can do to stop these devices from compromising the network by blocking their use We can block USB devices from being able to connect unless they are a managed resource, so that users can't just plug anything they bring in from home All USB devices have an ID, which can be registered with a central authentication server to check before a computer allows it to be used Of course this needs third-party software, but can be done quite easily We can also block devices from being able to obtain an IP address or connect to the corporate network in the first place We shouldn't have a free-for-all attitude on the network It should be locked down to approved devices only Only managed devices can connect and they will have to authenticate I think it s asking for trouble to allow users to connect their own private devices to the network or services I don t see how you can comply with any standards or your own security policies when allowing this, as you don t know what s connected or how it s configured Even if they are secure a very big IF , by not knowing the configuration or being able to audit it, you are surely in violation of any accreditation or certification that you may have because you cannot test or 'prove' your compliance

NTT Docomo may offer iPad mobile plan in Japan in June

2010-02-03 00:42:30 - Hack In The Box : Whatever scorned denials Japan's NTT Docomo whispered when it lost the iPhone to Softbank, a recent report hints that Docomo still pines for a relationship with Apple According to the Yomiuri Shimbun, Docomo is considering selling SIM cards for the new unlocked iPad when the 3G version hits stores in Japan And, contrary to the lack of international release date information from Apple, the paper claims that the WiFi version of the iPad will debut in Japan in March, followed by the 3G version in June According to the report, if Docomo goes through with such a plan, it would break a long held tradition in Japan's hyper-competitive mobile phone market by being the first major domestic telecommunications company to sell SIM cards that are not bundled with handsets While it's certainly no iPhone, since the iPad has a microphone, it's not inconceivable that the Japan hacker community might come up with an interesting way to turn the device into a new kind of mobile communications device we never could have imagined

Getting the Lock Code on an LG Mobile Phone

2010-01-27 04:47:53 - HiR Information Report : A few weeks ago, my trusty LG Env3 met its untimely demise in a washing machine I immediately yanked the battery out first None of the usual tricks worked I tried many of them, but here are a few that HAVE worked for me in the past with other peoples' phones Take it apart and blow-dry the electronics Seal it in a container of uncooked rice or other desiccant overnight This isn't about drying a phone out, though I surfed eBay and was taken aback by the prices for used but working Env3's So I decided to buy a broken one Preferably one with a mechanical problem where the non-damaged mechanical parts from my electronically-fried phone could be put to good repair use Like this one Lo and behold, the case was pretty well damaged and the ribbon cables joining the two halves had been severed Otherwise, the phone seemed to be in okay shape Commence repair We are Env3 of Borg Parts everywhere, mix and match a frankenphone What a mess There's not much I can teach you about this If you have the know-how to disassemble the pieces of two nearly-identical non-working objects and you know which parts are bad, you can probably assemble one good working unit That's not what this is about, either This is about what happened to me once I powered on the resulting piecemeal ware -- something that happens probably more often than you'd think, whenever you buy a used phone from someone you don't know The Lock Code OF DOOM By default, the lock code is the last-four digits of the phone's programmed phone number during initial programming This is different than the SERVICE CODE which is usually six zeroes In the case of the eBay phone, though, we don't know the phone number The easiest way to find out is to access the service menu On newer LG phones, you enter PROGRAM followed by the VX- model number, and hit send The model number can usually be found inside the phone behind the battery compartment If it's a QWERTY clamshell like mine, the phone must be opened and the code must be entered on the QWERTY keyboard Example The Env3 is a VX-9200 and the service menu is accessed by hammering in Sym 3 Sym 3PROGRAM9200 SEND which shows on the screen as 77647269200 A prompt will show up for the service code Again, this is 000000 by default Access the Service Programming menu, usually the first option And don't change anything You'll see the Mobile Equipment ID and ESN on the first screen and the Phone Number on the second screen Write the phone number down Exit the service programming menu This will usually cause the phone to turn off or reboot Try the last four digits of the phone number as the unlock code Usually, this works When you call your provider to activate your phone, this unlock code should be changed to the last four digits of your phone number, and you're in the clear Consult your user manual if you wish to de-activate locking In my case, however, the user was savvy or paranoid enough to know that friends who know the mobile number could probably guess the lock code That is to say, the lock code on this phone was NOT the last four digits, and I was still locked out of the phone I paid for At this point, I'm thinking that it'd have been nice for the seller to remember there was a lock code and to provide it Oh well Who am I to let a little 4-digit code get in my way Not bloody likely Most phone service techs will charge 30 to 50 to remove the lock code Highway robbery is somewhat expected with these guys, though Enter my good old friend QPST Officially for service technician use only, QPST is a suite of programs for troubleshooting and programming phones using Qualcomm's lineup of mobile baseband processors I used QPST in an article just over 2 years ago when discussing tethering The same thing applies You can't buy QPST, but it's out there and you can easily download it or get it from a friend who works in the industry You also have to run it on Windows, or at least in a virtual machine If you do try to get it in the wild you should probably have a good anti-virus solution installed You'll also need a data cable for your phone LG's newer phones ship with a data cable and a USB Wall-Wart, so you probably already have a data cable Once you have the phone hooked up and the drivers installed, you should be able to see the phone in the QPST Configuration tool If not, click Add Port and add one of the USB Serial ports Select the phone from the list and launch the Service Programming tool from the Start Clients menu Flip over to the 1X HDR Security Tab and click the Read From Phone button Voila You've found the lock code Below, you can see it was set to 4776 You should also be able to change it from this menu, but I didn't bother trying While there are some pretty cool things you can do with QPST aside from the things I have covered on HiR, you can also brick or damage your phone when you mess with it at this level, so think before you act HiR Information Report is brought you you by Edgeos, Your Network Security Platform

Geo Location based DDOS can target Mobile Operators

2010-01-20 22:15:59 - Information Security Short Takes : The sharp rise of smart mobile phones is introducing a new and concerning attack vector - a geo-location based DDOS Example Scenario Imagine a popular mobile application bejeweled like game that is downloaded by many 1 The app contains a small amount of code to reference the phone's GPS and also check in with a command and control website 2 The attacker decides on a city to target and a popular time of day and then updates the command and control website 3 The mobie applications all check in with the C C site and all mobile applications in the city area begin downloading large video files from YouTube Result A massive sudden spike in high bandwidth usage of the mobile data network in a single metropolitan area Most cellular networks run near capacity during the lunch rushes of popular cities A sudden massive spike such as this would likely push the network over the edge and bring it down entirely This is a tough issue to address and I think it warrants a bit of consideration This is a guest post by Michael Coates, a senior application security consultant with extensive experience in application security, security code review and penetration assessments He has conducted numerous security assessments for financial, enterprise and cellular customers world-wide The original text is published on Application Security Talkback and comments are most welcome Related posts GSM Encryption Broken - Cellular Calls At Risk When Will Your Mobile Phone get Hacked IMAGE
