Noise and ghost AP's - is my Wi-Spy DBx broken

Secuobs.com : 2009-05-22 23:30:20 - MetaGeek Makers of the WiSpy Spectrum Analyzer - Until a couple of weeks ago, the 5GHz band in Chanalyzer wascompletely silent, except for my 80211a access point running onchannel 40 5200MHz I've been running this thing about 7 hours a dayfor 5 days a week for a few weeks now, all on the same laptop Thensuddenly one day, I have noise all over the spectrum I also have aweak ghost image of my access point, which is running at 5200MHzchannel 40, appearing at 5465MHz which is not a legal 80211a wi-fichannel By ghost image, I mean that it tracks the activity of my APexactly So when there is traffic on my AP and it lights up like aChristmas tree on the spectral and topographical views, the ghostimage at 5465MHz also lights up The only difference is that the ghostimage is weaker, around -75dBm, while my AP is about -30dBm If mylaptop with the Wi-Spy is connected to my 80211g AP with 80211adisabled on the wireless card, I only see this ghost image and a fewweaker ghosts spread throughout the 5GHz spectrum If I'm connected tothe 80211a AP, then there is noise all over the spectrum, peaking at5200MHz my AP, and decreasing steadily except for the ghost at5465MHz until there is not much noise at the 5800MHz end of thespectrum Now while I would consider the possibility of a newinterference source, the fact that the ghosts exactly track theactivity of my AP leads me to believe that the Wi-Spy DBx ismalfunctioningIncidentally, I was using Chanalyzer version 3220119 when thisstarted, and have upgraded to 3250511 with no change I've trieddifferent USB ports and even a different laptop with no change Theaccess point is a Cisco 1131AG, with both A and B/G modes activeThere also seems to be more noise than before in the 24GHz range, butnothing I can proveAttached are several pop-up images showing the phenomenon occurringIs my Wi-Spy DBx broken or is something else going on ThanksBroken Wi-Spy DBx Image 1 - All Views: Laptop wi-fi card has 80211a disabledBrokenWi-Spy DBx Image 1 - All Views: Laptop wi-fi card has 80211a disabled-Broken Wi-Spy DBx Image 2 - Spectral and Topographic: Laptop wi-fi card has 80211a disabledBrokenWi-Spy DBx Image 2 - Spectral and Topographic: Laptop wi-fi card has80211a disabled-Broken Wi-Spy DBx Image 3 - Short Timescale - All Views: Laptop wi-fi card is connected via 80211aBrokenWi-Spy DBx Image 3 - Short Timescale - All Views: Laptop wi-fi card isconnected via 80211a-Broken Wi-Spy DBx Image 4 - Short Timescale - Spectral and Topographic: Laptop wi-fi card is connected via 80211aBrokenWi-Spy DBx Image 4 - Short Timescale - Spectral and Topographic:Laptop wi-fi card is connected via 80211a-Broken Wi-Spy DBx Image 5 - Long Timescale - All Views: Laptop wi-fi card is connected via 80211aBrokenWi-Spy DBx Image 5 - Long Timescale - All Views: Laptop wi-fi card isconnected via 80211a-Broken Wi-Spy DBx Image 6 - Long Timescale - Spectral and Topographic: Laptop wi-fi card is connected via 80211aBrokenWi-Spy DBx Image 6 - Long Timescale - Spectral and Topographic: Laptopwi-fi card is connected via 80211aIMAGE IMAGE IMAGEIMAGE

How to analyze antenna frequency response using Chanalyzer

Secuobs.com : 2009-05-13 21:17:48 - MetaGeek Makers of the WiSpy Spectrum Analyzer - Here is an example of using Chanalyzer to check frequency response ofantennaAs you know, antenna has limited bandwidth, and usually cannot coverwhole band Consequence is that signal is better on some frequenciesand worse on others It is good to know which frequencies antennamatches, so use it thereYou can roughly check how antenna responds on different frequenciesJust connect it to an AP, and start scanning using WiSpy Changechannels from first to last on band, and each time leave enough timefor WiSpy to scan enough data to allow Chanalyzer to display visiblepattern After you recorded all channels graph will show you howantenna responds to different frequencies Channel with highest levelis the one that antenna matches the most Some antennas are tuned toone channel, some cover several channels and rare ones cover wholebandYou may check example i attaches You may notice that antenna matcheschannels 2 to 5, as that is where signal level is highestPay attention that this method is not very precise, as it actuallymeasures sum of frequency responses of all elements involved: not justmeasured antenna, but also transmitting device, receiving antenna andWiSpy device tooI made this measurements using WiSpy 24x with 2 dB antenna I got withit Result matched expectations as I got this antenna as tuned forchannel 3 Antenna is Slotted Wave Guide with 16 + 16 slotsIMAGE IMAGE IMAGEIMAGE

Broad spectrum interference pattern

Secuobs.com : 2009-05-13 21:17:48 - MetaGeek Makers of the WiSpy Spectrum Analyzer - Hi team,My company has recently acquired a WiSpy DBx to troubleshoot WiFiproblems at a customer of ours, and the other day I had a 'field day'with it, what a great toolThe customer is truck company, and they were/are having problems in atruck service garage with a wireless network, and with a wirelessdiagnostic system used for maintance proceduresThe wireless network with problems is the 'internal 1' network onchannel 1 in the picture attached It shares channel 1 with a externalWLAN with a hidden SSID Several stationary source of interferencewere easily found including a wireless 'wheel-lining up' device usedby the next door tire fitter, this is the spike just before channel1 However, everything worked in the presence of these sources, sothey were not the main cause of the problemsWe ran WiSpy for several days, and used pingplotter to determine whenthere were connectivity problems A few days went by without anypacketloss, when suddenly there was a half-hour period with veryerratic performance on layer 3 Zooming into the Chanalyzer recordingat that time showed the picture attached With this image in mind, Ilooked at the data recorded earlier, and found the same patternoccuring every day at around the same time, even though it didn't leadto packetloss in our pingplotter probeIt seems someone in the neighborhood runs a big machine or atransmitter of sorts from around noon until 3-4 pm, causing a veryregular interference pattern across the entire spectrum although notas pronounced in channel 12 and 13 Does anyone have any idea whatthis could be There are mainly automotive businesses in the area, atire-shredder next door runs his shredders 8 hours a day, so doesn'tfit the bill, a tire fitter, an office, a fuel station, a dealership, etcIMAGEIn the meantime we have moved the 'internal 1' WLAN to channel 13,where it so far appears to work without problems The exact problemswith the diagnostic tools aren't clear yet, as the technicians haven'tactually tried to use it in a long time, and every time I watched overtheir shoulder it worked fineAny input would be appreciated,Thanks in advance,Regards, AnneIMAGE IMAGE IMAGEIMAGE

gpx processing bugs

Secuobs.com : 2009-09-24 04:40:14 - MetaGeek Makers of the Wi Spy Spectrum Analyzer - I ve recently bought a GlobalSat ND-100 GPS USB Dongle - USA 4800 baud firmware for around 35 and have been testing it and InSSIDER out I m may not be all that happy with the ND-100 but I ll write about that in a separate post However the output from the ND-100 as captured in gpx log files triggers several bugs in the gpx processing code file C SVN Inssider LogViewerFormcs I ve confirmed all of these bugs by editing the raw log file and getting things to work 1 Sometimes a ND-100 log has 3d , sometimes dgps, and sometimes it starts with the first and changes to the second The code does not understand dgps differential gps if gpxWaypoints j fix 2d gpxWaypoints j fix 3d , and all dgps waypoints are ignored Editing the log to replace dgps with 3d gives reasonable behavior 2 A ND-100 log sometimes contains illegal channel values such as 0, 26 and 135 This causes the processing code to crash with an ArraryReference error The code needs a simple bounds check 3 SSID s which various sorts of software display as Unavailable or Unknown encode this fact by putting null byte s in their broadcast SSID This may cause various problems in the log processing, one being that if the optional dumping of each AP is enabled, the software tries to create a directory that contains a null character, which throws an Illegal characters in path error This problem can be fixed in LogViewerFormcs However this bug prevents some other tools such af Firefox or EasyGPS from reading the raw gpx files, so maybe it should be corrected in ScannerFormcs Fixing these 3 bugs are minor code changes Maybe for the long run it would be better if LogViewerFormcs kept statistics on the reasons that waypoints get ignored IMAGE IMAGE IMAGE IMAGE

Need some advice please

Secuobs.com : 2009-09-20 17:41:05 - MetaGeek Makers of the Wi Spy Spectrum Analyzer - Hi, I need a little advice and I know nothing so I apologise ahead of time if this is a very stupid question When I run inssider my wireless shows me running on RSSI -50 ish but my 12 neighbours who show up are showing RSSI -82 to -92 and I'm wondering if this is why my internet is shoddy - particularly for watching TV or films I changed the channel on the netgear, and I looked up RSSI and as far as I can tell it seems to be something about the received signal strength So I'm wondering if I have to buy a new netgear or if I have a problem with my laptop I think those are the options Or maybe the RSSI isn't important - but then why am I the only one with the 50 I'm ashamed to be so lacking in knowledge and I hope someone wouldn't mind taking a little time to help me out with a bit of guidance thanks, Kirstie IMAGE IMAGE IMAGE IMAGE

WiSpy DBx measurements interpretation and antenna gain

Secuobs.com : 2009-09-17 17:19:07 - MetaGeek Makers of the Wi Spy Spectrum Analyzer - Hi, I'm confused with signal strength levels I'm getting with WiSpy DBx I have the following setup on the table 2 x RB433AH with R52n cards and 14 dBi patch antennas one RB is configured as AP other RB is configured as Client Station SISO configuration is used regulatory domain settings are used - tx power is 6 dBm - EIRP 20 dBm distance between antennas is 120 cm WiSpy DBx is placed right between the antennas 60 cm from each antenna runing UDP test, both ways, with speeds of 50 and 60 Mbps According to link budget signal levels should be the following Power at the WiSpy tx power antenna gain - tx line loss - free space loss 6 14 - 1 - 9245 dB - 20 log 58e9 - 20 log 0,0006 19 - 43 - 24 Power at the receiver tx power antenna gain - tx line loss - free space loss antenna gain - rx line loss 6 14 - 1 - 9245 dB - 20 log 58e9 - 20 log 0,0012 14 - 1 33 - 49 13 - 3 WiSpy DBx shows that peak signal values are around -50 dB and that average signal value is around -60 dB This is 35 dB less than calculated with the link budget I suppose that WiSyp DBx antenna gain is included in the signal level that is shown in the Chanalyzer In other words - signal shown in Chanalyzer is signal before the antenna, not after the antenna gain has been added I don't believe that WiSpy is so much off point, but I'm probably not interpreting results and measurements properly Any help with clarifying this will be greatly appreciated Thanks Ozren IMAGE IMAGE IMAGE IMAGE

Thoughts on this

Secuobs.com : 2009-09-15 07:55:43 - MetaGeek Makers of the Wi Spy Spectrum Analyzer - I am happy with most of what I see here There is a busy PTP link on ch 2, and there is an access point on ch 6 I have no idea what the garbage is just below ch 1, but there is a lot of it Makes me think that bumping the PTP and AP up one channel might be a good idea What I really would like some thoughts on are the signals either side of the AP They look awfully symmetrical to me - like some sort of sidebands from the AP -- or could they be some sort of images responses from the Wi-spy 24x If I move closer to the PTP link so that it dominates, I see some similar responses around ch 2 Note - these are both D-Link access points, but quite different versions - ch 2 is an 80211b only box, and ch 6 covers both 24 and 5 MHz 80211a b g Edit tried disabling the ch 6 AP The signals either side of ch 6 disappeared Also no sign of any similar signals around ch 2 -- which I do see if I move closer to that I have to assume that I am overloading the 24x and these are spurious responses -- is this normal Edit2 These don't look like simple image responses, because they are half the width of the main signal IMAGE IMAGE IMAGE IMAGE

Cheap Auto Glass

Secuobs.com : 2009-09-10 14:18:36 - MetaGeek Makers of the Wi Spy Spectrum Analyzer - If you are looking for cheap auto glass, the first thing you should to is decide if you need a total replacement or just a repair Generally, you're going to want to get a replacement if you have cracks at the edge of your windshield, cracks in the middle of it, or cracks, which make for an uneven surface Although we tend to think of glass as very fragile, this is not the case with a windshield, which consists of 3 layers Your windshield can last for a long time, but you do not want to take the chance of the crack increasing and making for a much more expensive repair or even total replacement It's always a good idea to go to your local auto glass shop to assess the situation If they can repair it, that's great If they say that you need a replacement, don't think that you have to get a new one You can get a very cheap windshield at your local junkyard Because color is not an issue there's a very good chance that you're going to find your windshield there Once you find it you just pay the auto glass shop to install it You may even find that you can save money by getting a used windshield from a junkyard rather than paying somebody to repair it for you You might recognize an auto glass shop just through their marketing But please keep in mind that just because someone is spending a lot of money on advertising, it does not mean that they are the best You want to talk to as many shops as possible so that you have some bargaining power if someone decides to overcharge you You'll also get a good idea of how much the repair replacement will cost nh auto glass IMAGE IMAGE IMAGE IMAGE

Auto Glass Repair vs Replacement

Secuobs.com : 2009-09-10 14:18:36 - MetaGeek Makers of the Wi Spy Spectrum Analyzer - Whenever there's an accident, the first thing that has a probability of breaking is the windshield Even a small crack can often spread across your area of vision or it can spread into the inner layer of your windshield, which is a plastic layer sandwiched between the two glass layers Even a small stone can cause extensive damage Whenever such a situation occurs, the first thing that arises in our mind is which option we should choose - repair or replacement If we go for repair rather than the replacement then certainly we can save some money Modern windshields have been designed to be repairable Nowadays special injections are coming into the automobile glass market that contain a special resin which is injected into the damaged area using unique tools that attach directly to the glass Some chips or cracks may react successfully to the repair whereas some may not Windshield repair is like first aid If you leave a crack and do not fix it, then it may cause more severe damage and the condition of the windshield can get much worse If a tiny size chip is just in front of your driving seat, then a quick repair is must as this may hinder your vision Windshield repair can be quarter sized or up to 3 inches long But some advance techniques can repair up to 12 inches long cracks For more than 12-inch cracks, only replacement is suggested Major thing that needs to be considered is the location and size of the damage If damage is at the edge of the windshield then it will spread fast and will destroy the integrity of the glass If any edge damage is found then repair it soon It will save the life of your windshield Some of current techniques do no repair those cracks that directly come into the view of driver s line of sight because a small distortion may still left behind In that case replacement would be a wise decision Cost of the repair is entirely depending upon the damage of the windshield If the cracks are quite long or around 12 inches then charges will be higher Certainly if you go for replacement then your insurance company may not pay you the entire replacement amount but in case of repair they may pay the total expenditure So repair is a more economical process Windshield repair or replacement is totally depending upon the size and location of the damage and cracks So, before going for any of these options just consult a glass specialist who can examine your shield and suggest if a repair will work or not If damage from an accident is quite big then do not compromise your life, as you know better that windshield replacement is a necessity Just bear in mind that your life is more valuable than anything else idaho auto glass IMAGE IMAGE IMAGE IMAGE

Stained Glass

Secuobs.com : 2009-09-10 14:18:36 - MetaGeek Makers of the Wi Spy Spectrum Analyzer - Glistening and vibrant, stained glass elicits gasps of wonderment and admiration Church windows, domes, lamps, decorative items, windowpanes, as well as art panels-- the beauty of stained glass is all around us The earliest practitioners of stained glass were Islamic artisans who fashioned bangles in glass worn even today in Eastern nations like Pakistan and India History records that the earliest expressions in Europe are from the 10th century onwards and are primarily depictions of Christ and biblical themes From then until now the art of stained glass has been practiced and innovated to suit different needs How glass is stained was first described in 1100 CE in a work by a German monk who called himself Theophilus The same technique described by him was used for over 900 years The golden age of stained glass art was the medieval period, when stained glass adorned many a cathedral in Europe, introducing a sense of heaven with light and beauty filtering through the aisles and prayer rooms The 19th century saw a renewed interest in the art form and renowned artists introduced many new innovations Louis Comfort Tiffany was among the first to revolutionize stained glass art by using copper-foil instead of lead, leading to the creation of opalescent glass treasured even today in the form of Tiffany lamps and objets d art After World War II the interest declined, to be revived many years later when Abstract Art and the Expressionist movement came into vogue The technique involves staining glass by adding certain metals to produce glowing colors Then, the artist creates images giving depth, shadows, and outlines by painting the glass with metal-oxide-based paints After which, the painted glass is fired like pottery in a kiln, where the oxide paint fuses permanently into the glass, giving the art form its nomenclature Artists obtain different effects of light transmission by using glass in different textures wavy, rippled, pebbled, smooth, hammered, or rough Experimenting with colors and shapes, the artisan or craftsperson who works with stained glass has taken the art form from being solely expressions of faith or religious art to art that teases the senses and occupies pride of place in homes, galleries, museum, business centers, convention halls, and even government buildings idaho auto glass IMAGE IMAGE IMAGE IMAGE

RSSI is NOT equal to Signal Strength dBm

Secuobs.com : 2009-07-13 08:01:02 - MetaGeek Makers of the Wi Spy Spectrum Analyzer - The term RSSI, used in the interface of inssider, is not adequated The unit dBm is related to the signal strength, and is generaly negative, ranging from -30 to -100 in the most cases RSSI is an arbritary value, ranging from 0 to 255 it varies between manufacturers , used by the wireless adapters to determine, for example, when the channel is free or when they have to do the roaming to another AP Sometimes, tools converts and shows this RSSI value as percentage, what causes the confusion with the signal strength I think it would be better to use the term Signal or Signal Strength , in the next versions, and not RSSI Hope it helps Pedro França Brazil IMAGE IMAGE IMAGE IMAGE
