Postman wins inaugural Cyber Security Challenge Par security_watchdogLe [2011-03-07] à 16:05:43
Présentation : A postman from Wakefield has been crowned as the first winner of the UK Cyber Security Challenge. The competition is designed to help discover those with the talents needed to help protect the UK against potential criminal and terrorist cyber threats, as a digital skills gap threatens to leave the country exposed to security threats. The challenge has been backed by a series of prominent security vendors including QinetiQ, Detica and Sophos, as they seek to address this issue before it becomes too late by encouraging non-security personnel to try their hand at a series of tasks. The grand finale took place on Sunday at Bristol's Science Centre and in the end it was postie Dan Summers who beat 25 other candidates to the prize, winning the final challenge set by sponsors Cassidian and HP. A 17-year-old college student from Cambridgeshire, Stuart Rennie, took second place in the competition, despite no formal security training or business experience. In the final, teams worked together to defend a simulated corporate network from sophisticated cyber attacks, as well as setting security policies and managing the day-to-day needs of employees. Speaking afterwards, Summers said he was now considering moving into the profession full time - something the course directors had hoped to encourage in participants by making them realise they could bring their skills to the industry. Having met the people in the industry and seeing how capable and welcoming they are, I'd love to work alongside them so I'll be looking closely at all the opportunities that have developed as a result of my involvement with the Challenge, he said. This aim will be helped by the prizes he's won, worth over 37,000, including entry to courses by the SANS Institute and the Open University, and memberships of the Institute of Information Security Professionals and the British Computer Society. The UK's security minister, Baroness Pauline Neville Jones, gave the government's backing to the event, saying it represented the sort of initiative the technology sector needed to foster to ensure the UK could benefit from the digital economy. The Cyber Security Challenge is a superb example of the genuine partnership between government, academia and the private sector that needs to be built if we are going to achieve the larger and highly-skilled cyber workforce we need, she said. Neville Jones also announced that the government would be providing funding from its National Cyber Security Programme to the tune of 180,000 for next year's challenge, which will be open for registration on a new web site on 28 March. So, those of who you think you know a script kiddie from a Trojan Horse know where sign up... Enhanced by Zemanta
